Manitowoc (WFRV) Strong winds and engine problems made for some rough waters for the S.S. Badger Thursday on its first voyage of the 2012 season. The car ferry was coming from Ludington, Michigan to Manitowoc.

For Ludington, the Badger issue is personal and financial as community rallies around its ferry
Ludingon Mayor John Henderson said that continuation of the S.S. Badger in light of its environmental regulatory issues is the top priority for his city. Ludington citizens won't consider that this might be the Badger's last season of operations.

S.S. Badger starts season; ferry owners ask EPA for five-year extension on coal ash dicharges
The S.S. Badger's controversial dumping of coal ash into Lake Michigan must stop by the end of this sailing season, threatening the future of the iconic ferry service out of Ludington. Lake Michigan Carferry has asked federal environmental regulators for another five years of the practice while an alternative fuel for the ship is secured.

Reports: S.S. Badger runs aground in Manitowoc harbor on first trip of the new season
The newspapers in Ludington and Manitowoc report that the 410-foot Badger has run aground on a shoaling in the Wisconsin harbor some 450 feet from the dock.

Reports: Ludington soldier loses arms in Afghanistan attack
Spec. Lund, 20, reportedly lost both arms and suffered wounds to his face during the attack, according to the Detroit Free Press. He has since been transported to Germany to receive care.

Eldred L Sterns
Eldred L Sterns, was born September 9, 1923 in Ludington Michigan, to Charles E Sterns and Lizzie (Fox) Sterns. He passed away on April 10, in Bradenton, Florida. He served in the United States Navy as a fighter pilot.

Report: Tugboats arrive to S.S. Badger in Manitowoc harbor
The Ludington Daily News reports a tugboat has arrived on scene to bring the boat to dock. Its starboard engine earlier lost a piston and because the Badger was running on less power, it was pushed into a sandbar because of strong, southernly winds.
