National Guard Training Exercise in Bartow Focused on Disaster Threat

The call came in at 5:30 a.m. Monday about a suspicious smell in Bartow. Traces of radiation were detected at a building on West Main Street in Bartow. The 28th National Guard Civil Support Team, which responds to threats of weapons of mass destruction, was dispatched from Clearwater to Polk County.

Polk School Board to Appeal State Board's Decision on Charter Schools USA

The state Board of Education has overturned a decision by the Polk County School District that denied an application by a nationwide charter organization. School Board members, however, still disagree and voted Tuesday to file an appeal in the 2nd District Court of Appeal in Lakeland.
